JAFOWL

The Army Officers' Wives' Club of the Greater Washington Area, more commonly known as AOWCGWA, invites you to join our club. Our name may be a little intimidating and our initials, AOWCGWA, hard to pronounce, but our members are military spouses just like you.

The Greater Metropolitan Area allows one to experience a very different military community than that common on military bases.  Living in the National Capital Region makes it easy to lose contact with the support that can come from a close community at a unit or installation level.  Members of the Army Officers’ Wives’ Club live throughout the metro area in Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia. We offer friendship, support, an opportunity to volunteer, and zip code groups to make it easier to connect to the people who live near you.  We offer fun activities and a close community for support and advice about unique activities available in this area.

Who are we?

As our name implies, the membership of AOWCGWA is made up of the spouses, widows/widowers of commissioned and warrant officers of the United States Army and also includes those in the United States Air Force, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and the United States Coast Guard (Active, Reserve and Retired); spouses of DA civilians (GS-9 and above); spouses of accredited Military Attaches and Assistant Attaches assigned to embassies in Washington DC; and spouses of foreign officers assigned to duties in the National Capital Region - spouses just like you who meet regularly to share their friendship and life experiences as military spouses. If you are looking for a group to join that shares your interests, and understands the life of a military spouse, then AOWCGWA is the place for you!  Although we have kept the name Army Wife (we have the copyright for the Army Wife Seal), all spouses of officers and warrant officers living in the National Capital Region from any of the United States Armed Services are welcome to join.

What is our club about?

Since 1974, AOWCGWA has worked to "provide and promote socio-economic and educational outreach to the Military District of Washington, Joint Service Headquarters, Myer-Henderson Hall and US Army Installation Command (IMCOM) and to encourage, support and maintain interaction of the membership."

We are a non-profit organization not a military or DoD agency.  In other words, our club offers its members friendship, social interaction, volunteer opportunities for service and educational outreach through a variety of activities.

Our monthly luncheons are held from September through May on the third Thurs. of each month

Special events and trips are planned by both our International Liaison and our Tours Chairwoman -- which provide opportunities to not only explore the diversity of this area, but also to share our culture with some of our foreign officers' spouses. Our Zip Code Coffee Groups provide opportunities to get better acquainted with those living in your local area if you enjoy Scrapbooking or Bridge, there are special activities just for you. Our Thrift Shop on Fort Myer is the place to be if you love working with people and want to help raise money to better our military community through scholarships and welfare grants. These are only a sampling of the activities available through AOWCGWA. There is truly something for everyone.
